How to Add Facebook Messenger Chat to Squarespace 7.1

In a world of instant everything, instant shipping, instant responses and sadly, instant coffee, people have become increasingly impatient with, well, everything.

And you guessed it, this impatience has filtered through into our everyday expectations, including shopping online and getting quick responses from businesses. That’s why it can be super helpful for you to add this free nifty Facebook messenger chat to your Squarespace 7.1 website.

Here’s our easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide on how to add Facebook messenger chat to your Squarespace 7.1 website:

1) Go to your Facebook Business Page

Go to your Facebook Business Page, on the left panel underneath ‘Manage Page’ go to ‘settings’ at the bottom.

2) Go to ‘Messaging’

On the left panel click ‘messaging’ and scroll down to ‘add messenger to your website’.

3) Customise the ‘Start the Conversation’ section

Underneath the ‘start the conversation tab’ you can customise your welcome message and add in some frequently asked questions that users can click on and get an instant answer.

4) ‘Customise your Chat Plugin’ section

There are a few settings underneath the ‘Customise your chat plugin’ that I would recommend changing:

  • Edit your greeting (the default is ‘Hi! How can we help you?’) to something that suits your brand tone
  • Guest chat - keep this switched on, this just allows people who aren’t signed into Facebook, or who don’t have a Facebook account to still use the messenger to chat to you.
  • ‘Choose a present option that compliments your brand’ - switch this on and then select your brand colour, this means that instead of the classic Facebook blue, you can add your brand colour so that it doesn’t clash with your beautiful website design.

Once you’ve made all your changes, click ‘publish’ at the bottom right-hand corner and this will save your changes.

6) Copy the Facebook Messenger code into your Squarespace 7.1 Site

Go to ‘set up’ in the top right-hand corner

And there you have it, how to add Facebook Messenger to your Squarespace 7.1 site.

Please note, sometimes you might have to refresh your page once the code has been saved to see the changes or view your website in a private browser/incognito mode as occasionally you can’t see the changes that you’ve made with the code injection when you are logged into your own Squarespace website.

Finally, there’s just one last thing to cover before you go…

When not to add Facebook messenger chat to your Squarespace 7.1 site:

The instant messenger chat is a great feature to have on your website if you or someone within your team is around to answer the questions that are coming in.

However, I know first-hand what it’s like to run a business, you’re wearing many hats, and if you can’t be around to answer the Facebook questions within a reasonable time, then you might actually be doing your digital reputation a disservice by leaving users twiddling their impatient thumbs waiting for a response from you.

You might notice that on our Squarespace website, we don’t have the Facebook messenger chat feature installed, as we’re not always around to readily answer questions as they come in, and we don’t want to leave our users feeling ignored.

As a primarily service-based business, our preferred method of contact is email or online form application, so we have chosen to direct our users to that rather than using the instant messenger services available.

Ultimately, every business is different and you’ve got to do what works for you!
